AFS: Chip shortage may last until the middle of 2023

According to foreign media reports, according to the latest data of the auto industry data forecast company AutoForecast Solutions (hereinafter referred to as AFS), as of September 4, due to the shortage of chips, the global auto market has reduced production by 3.1561 million units in total this year. AFS predicts that by the end of this year, the cumulative production reduction in the global automobile market will climb to 3.9951 million vehicles.

According to the latest statistics of AFS, last week, due to the continuous impact of chip shortage on auto production, global auto manufacturers reduced production of about 32900 cars. Among them, the first to bear the brunt is no longer North America and Europe, but South America, which lost about 16600 cars; The second is in other parts of Asia, with about 9300 cars reduced; 6100 vehicles were reduced in North America; Europe reduced production by 1000 cars.

Although enterprises have sent a long-term optimistic signal on chip supply, they will still exert pressure on production in the short term. For example, Toyota Motor said at the end of August that its global production in July fell 8.6% year on year, the fourth consecutive month of decline, partly because of chip shortages.

On August 30, Wei Zhejia, CEO of TSMC, also said that chips costing between 50 cents and 10 dollars were in general shortage, which was hindering the development of the semiconductor industry with a scale of 600 billion dollars. In the automotive industry, a wireless chip worth 50 cents (about 3 yuan) has hindered the production of cars worth 50000 dollars (about 340000 yuan), but he did not elaborate on this.

Sam Fiorani, Vice President of AFS Global Automotive Forecast, said that the chip shortage is expected to last at least until the middle of 2023, when the automotive industry should start to see "production reduction mitigation".
